folks w/ odd & affected voices

i used to not be able to stand bobcat goldthwait because of his horrible horrible faux-neurotic voice he used most of his comedy career. it was murder on the ears and i think seeing him in police academy 2 as officer zed might might have been one of the very first times i experienced a feeling of annoyance, a mood that would later visit me pretty often throughout my teenage and young adult life. then suddenly bobcat just stopped talking like that years ago and seemed mildly funny in interviews. and i liked him more after his involvement with the chapelle show. i still don’t like gilbert gottfried though.

anyway, i saw that photo of dr dre at the mtv awards looking scary swoll and i remembered he had a thing with singer michel’le when i was in grade school. then i started wondering if that minnie mouse shit was really her natural speaking voice because she had vocal power when she sang. seems kinda suspect.

i will say that i love cary grant’s weird mid-atlantic accent and it is totally affected. but i like it cause it doesn’t sound like anything else. i don’t know how to describe it but i looked on wikipedia and they describe it as a weird hybrid of upper and working class. and he manages to make it sound natural.

this is the type of stuff i think about when i’m spacing out at work. is that weird? i am curious.

edit: i found an audio clip of Cary Grant! funny, it’s one of my favorite lines from North by Northwest.

seriously, what is that?

I watched Some Like it Hot the other day and was reminded of a funny story. To quote IMDB:

“Tony Curtis has said that he asked Billy Wilder if he could imitate Cary Grant for his stint as the millionaire in the movie. Wilder liked it and they shot it that way. Apparently, Grant saw the parody of himself and stated, “I don’t talk like that.”"

Ha ha, the best part is I can totally hear Grant’s voice saying “I don’t talk like that,” although to complete the mental image I insert “now look here…” at the beginning of the statement.
